There's something fascinating to me about now-successful musicians' early work. Not early work as in that one album that's kinda hard to find except for on ebay, early work like the kind that no one knows exists until your bitter rival unleashes some post-high school demos halfway through your career. This brings me to the case in point: Pinwheel. Earlier this month Pitchfork reported that Death Cab frontman Ben Gibbard would be joining Justin Kennedy on the road in the latter's new project, Army Navy.
So who is this Justin Kennedy you ask? Among other things, he's Gibbard's ex-bandmate in a band called Pinwheel, which existed in the Bellingham music scene pre-DCFC. About two years ago the cassette surfaced (I believe via the Death Cab message boards) and horrified fanboys everywhere. Gibbard can be heard sharing vocal duties (if you can call them that) and showing off a nasally punk-rock growl.
Below is the demo and a song not released by the band performed on Bellingham radio entitled Radio Static Scars. I think it's safe to say that even if Ben pulls a McCartney on us years down the road, nothing he will ever do will be as cringe worthy as these.

[mp3] Pinwheel - Idled Drivers
[mp3] Pinwheel - Phase Shifter
[mp3] Pinwheel - Pabst
[mp3] Pinwheel - Grape Juice

It sounds like they were trying too hard to be like Sunny Day.
Hi, I really enjoy reading your blog. I've just started writing my own blog and I want to add your blog to my link. Is it OK? :)

Jesus this is bad.
It wasn't awful after the first song, the next one he sang on (grape juice i think) was just ear-shredding
you should try your hardest to get a hold of some paperback mp3s..
im totally in the mood for ancient bazantastic music :]]
Yeah it sounds more like Diary era Sunny Day to me. Give the guy a break. Haven't we all been in embarrassing bands at one point?
I read that wrong, thinking Benny Gibbard was in Army Navy. I'm dying for new material of Ben's. I'm still forever in debt to your finding's of "Slow & Steady" with Ben...seriously.
