Oh Crap, I Like Ryan Adams

I've always ignored Ryan Adams. Maybe it was his ridiculous prolificness, perhaps it was his at-times over-indulgent nature, maybe it was all the stories I had heard from the Whiskeytown days. Whatever the case, I decided I would try to get into him one final time; one more try and that would be it. Never again would I be wondering what everyone sees in him because I would know beyond the shadow of a doubt that I didn't like the dude. The problem came when I did so, and actually enjoyed a lot of what I heard post-Gold. Once I moved past everything that I held against him I found a lot of his songs to be really good. He writes and sings with a sort of nonchalantness that can be a bit disarming. It almost feels like he's not trying or doesn't even care, which sort of made me do the same.

Here are some of the songs I have been getting into for all those who share(d) my position:

EDIT: So stereogum just posted the Ry-man's celebrity playlist, and I now realize why I don't like HIM (not his music, but him). Seriously, what the heck? How could someone who can write such a great song listen to bad rap (Jay-Z), nu metal (Linkin Park), and boring adult-contemporary Coldplay knockoffs (Keane)? Anyways, read it here if you want.

Buy Ryan Adams records

i told you...what, i don't get any credit for this one?

i love how everyone perceives bands such as travis and keane as coldplay 'knock offs' just because they(cplay) happen to have gained the most popularity. . .coldplay actually opened for keane a time or two back in the day, while travis came along before coldplay. . .

Well I never mentioned Travis.

As far as the keane/coldplay situation goes, I had no idea. I don't like Keane's music at all though so I guess it doesn't really matter.

ryan adams is a diva. and a spoiled brat. but, damn. he makes good music.

(fyi: 'come pick me up' isn't post-Gold. it's off of 'Heartbreaker' his debut and i daresay, best.)

bad rap? if jay-z is so bad, then what's good? please don't tell me that the only kind of rap you find acceptable is that "intelligent hip-hop" crap like blackalicious and roots.

Yep, pretty much. Among others, I'll make a rap post some time, anonymous.

Somehow I think that playlist was more of Mr. Adams tomfoolery.

I don't think he was kidding, he culd like pop and hip-hop. Not everyone who makes good songs listens to the same stuff you do, lola.

Jay-Z is bad rap by almost any definition

Mainly because he is a moron, but he is also just a bit crap

I read in a interview with Ryan Adams once that his favorite artist was Richard Hawley - who is fantastic, check out songs Born Under a Bad Sign, and then Run for Me, really superb stuff. Cheers

Anyone who thinks Jay-z is bad rap is a clueless, pseudo-alternative idiot. One of the many indie kids who have listened to hip-hop for like 2 months and now feel the need to press their ill-informed opinions on everyone else. Jay-z is one of the best rappers of all time - hands down.

Your rap post would make any hip-hop fan laugh, no doubt you think MF Doom, Slug, Eyedea etc are all better than Jay? Lol, morons.
